Who we are

Throw Hands Ceramics is a pottery studio in Eugene, Oregon founded by Bailey Brooks. As many potters do, Bailey discovered the joys of throwing clay when she needed a damn break from the demands (oops, joys) of work and motherhood. At the end of her first pottery class, her instructor said with relief “I have never had anyone that I didn’t think could learn to work on the wheel, but you were almost it.” She quickly discovered that there is no room for control freaks at the wheel, which as you can imagine, horrified her. Through time and gritted teeth, she learned to relinquish control and allow the clay to transform on its own. If you’re still following along, this is also a metaphor for motherhood. Six years later, Bailey still finds joy in working at the wheel and has opened her own studio. It is in this space and practice that she creates functional and beautiful ceramic wares, because it’s better to throw clay than to throw hands.
